Family time is important. At Chateau Glengarry, we have set up our facility and grounds to maximize enjoyment for our residents and their families. We know from experience that seniors who receive visits from their families gain huge benefits for their emotional and physical health. Here are four big reasons you should keep visiting your loved ones!
1. Evaluate their health, safety and well-being.
Popping in for a chat gives you the opportunity to check up on your favourite senior’s happiness and health. If they let you know they need more help, extra care, or other potential areas of need, you’ll be well positioned to approach our staff to discuss it too.
2. Keep them emotionally engaged.
Engaging in long chats in the gazebo, playing cards in our visiting rooms, or sharing meals in our dining room, or taking a leisurely walk together on our grounds can bring back positive memories for our residents—and create new ones too! Visits can also help everyone feel connected and less lonely—and may ward off any depression, social isolation or stress.
3. Maintain traditions.
Throughout the year, you can come together with your loved ones to commemorate special occasions like Mother’s and Father’s Day, major holidays like Easter or Christmas. And on birthdays, you can gather around to sing and eat cake. There’s nothing that says happiness like being together to celebrate!
4. Remind them of your love.
Through the power of technology, our seniors are often able to stay in touch with family. But there’s nothing like physical presence and proximity. If you’re able, taking the time to visit the seniors you know is a valuable reminder that you love them and care about their long-term well-being.
During the difficult time, we all recognize that it’s sometimes impossible to swing by for crowded in-person visit, no matter how much you might want to check on your loved ones and spend time with them. Fortunately, there are many other ways you can and should let them know you’re thinking of them:
- Phone calls
- Video chats (like Skype or FaceTime)
- Emails or snail mail
- Photos
- Letters
- Texts
This communication can do so much to help reduce loneliness or homesickness—and bring warm and fuzzy feelings to our residents!
Gladly, more and more in-person visits are opened.
